Stratos is excited to be the Official Provider of Mobile Satellite Services to the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009 – the world’s premier ocean race.

At Stratos, we excel at pushing technology to the peak of performance. And we look forward to the racing teams doing the same.

Stratos will provide mobile satellite services via FleetBroadband, Fleet 33 and Inmarsat-C for video, audio, and text-based reports. "We are fortunate to be a part of the team that will enable the Volvo Ocean Race to benefit from an amazing leap forward in maritime communications technology”, said Stratos President and CEO Jim Parm. “FleetBroadband will provide excellent crew communications for the racers. We expect it will also help bring the excitement and action of this important race to a global audience of nearly 2 billion, via HDTV, radio and Internet.”

With FleetBroadband from Stratos, the Volvo Ocean Race will transmit HDTV footage of race events, radio interviews and race reports. As well, crews can access weather charts and navigational aids. Via Inmarsat-C DNID reporting, each yacht will transmit its location every 15 minutes so that fans and organizers can accurately track the leadership tables, not to mention maintaining the safety of the crew on board.

FleetBroadband from Stratos is the first high-speed, mobile data network that offers seamless worldwide coverage in combination with small antenna equipment. Using the most powerful mobile communications satellites, FleetBroadband provides easy-to-use, fast and reliable access to always on e-mail, Internet, corporate network, IP streaming and voice services, regardless of your vessel’s location.

To deliver a full communications solution to the VOR, Stratos has partnered with Inmarsat, who owns and operates the satellite network, and Thrane & Thrane, who manufactures the equipment. Collectively, our technologies and expertise will deliver end-to-end communications for the racing yachts and the race organizers.
